This is Part 6 in my egg retrieval journey. If you want to check out the earlier posts, you can check them out here, here, here, here, and here.
If you’ve been following along, you know that I survived D-Day (ahem, ER Day). Hallelujah!
If I survived, you can too my friend!
So what wisdom can I pass on?
1. Schedule the cycle when you don’t have a ton of commitments. Truth is, fitting in your shots every night, at the same time, is tough. Don’t do what I did…schedule my cycle during one of my busiest months at work. What was I thinking?! Oh, that’s right, I wasn’t.
2. While we are at it…reduce your stress, lighten your load…you get the drift. The shots can make you sick…so set yourself up to take it easy!!
3. No one likes to give themselves shots. But rest assured…you can totally do this! How? Ice, ice, baby. No seriously, ice the area for 15 minutes before. Helps make sure you don’t really feel the needle going in. Easy peasy.
4. Plan on giving yourself 20-30 minutes to prep the medications each night. It took me a while to get a handle on this part. By the end I could prep everything in about 10 minutes. Those air bubbles are a b*tch!
5. Make sure you can take a few days off after your procedure in case you have some pain or discomfort afterwards. Trust me. I was out of commission for a good 4 days. (My left ovary really hates me).
6. You are probably going to be emotional for a couple of days after. This isn’t the time to watch The Notebook. Or make any major decisions.
7. Finally, I’d recommend sharing with a few close friends that you are going through all of this. My family and friends were amazing through this whole process. From taking me to my procedure, watching Winston (my dog), bringing me dinner the night of my procedure, talking me off a ledge a couple of times, and sending me flowers. It helps to not feel so alone when you have friends to share the process with. Seriously – I have the best family and friends!
So where did I end up at the end of this whole thing?
- 32 injections
- 5 ultra sounds
- 5 medications
- 1 bruise
- Follicle size day of the trigger injection ranged from 11 to 19 mm
- 14 days of stimulation
- 10 eggs retrieved
- 7 eggs frozen
- 4 days of recovery
Whew! Patting myself on the back!
